According to a Japanese folk legend, the moon was inhabited by a hare, who spent his time pounding rice for round rice cakes, ‘mochi’.
The word mochi is also used for full moon.
By running over the waves of the sea in the eighth month of the year, the doe (female hare) would become pregnant and live a thousand years,
after which her fur would grow white.
The hare and the moon are symbols for a long-lasting life.
In ‘all facing upwards’, this theme overlaps with the bizarre car ride I took on the night of December 1st 2009. It was a full moon,
and a hare unexpectedly crossed the road to stop in front of my car.
The percussionist conveys the atmosphere of a long and desolate
drive through the night, gaze vacant.
A muted and mystical work.
